Administration is specified in the SurfStatsLive Global Setup application. Only one
username can be specified with this method of authentication.
A convenient Checklist is given at the end of this section for quick setup of the
Authentication Provider.
Authentication Provider Considerations
If you already have a Windows 2000 domain it is recommended that you choose
to authenticate users through the domain as it involves the least administration
due to the centralization of user accounts. You can also export the user accounts
with a script from the domain and import the user accounts on the physical server
if you want to use the user accounts from the domain locally on each computer.
When this is done Windows won’t export the passwords, from the domain due to
security reasons. The SurfStatsLive Reporting Service does not provide scripts for
this purpose (importing/exporting Server Administrators).
Also consider the following for domain-based authentication:
If you install the SurfStatsLive Reporting Service on a Windows 2000/2003
machine that functions as a domain controller, no local SAM database exist so
you have to choose the domain option.
For the domain option the computer must have joined a Windows 2000
domain already.
Make sure that the DNS settings for the computer points to a DNS server that
can locate the Windows 2000 domain, which would probably be an internal
DNS server. If this is not properly set up authentication of server and profile
administrators could take a long time.
Currently the SurfStatsLive Reporting Service only supports Windows 2000
domains.
If you have problems authenticating users on the domain and/or with the local
Windows user database use the SurfStatsLive method of authentication. This
requires no set of the user account with a Windows Administration tool.
Administrators User Accounts
User accounts for Server Administrators CANNOT be created by any of the
components of the SurfStatsLive Reporting Service. It was designed in this way
so that the existing Windows SAM or Windows Domain user database could fulfill
the role, minimizing administrative effort. To create new users use a Windows
Administration tool like Computer Management (locally) or Active Directory Users
and Computers (for a domain).
